No one told me!

I guess there are a lot things that could start with the words "No one told me.." when it comes to raising children. This one is no exception. I have an almost 2 year old that has started the repeated"Why? Why Mommy?" questions. I had no idea that started so young! It's an endless battle really. When the 1st thru 5th "Why?" is asked, I kind of ignore it, hoping that it's just rehtorical and doesn't really need an answer. Then the 6th and 7th "Why?" is asked and I feel like I should give an actual explanation! After I've gone into the reasoning behind the questioning, I feel my job is done! She will be satisfied now. Then come the 10th, 11th & 12th "Why?" and it's at that point when I find myself turning around and saying the dreaded "mommy answer"... "BECAUSE I SAID SO"!!!! Ugh, those words make my toes curl even as they are coming out of my mouth. And here I am saying them to a 23 month old! So, not only did no one tell me that I'd have a "Why?" asking toddler but they also didn't tell me I would use those awful words "because I said so" at such an early age. Is this just the beginning? Am I going to be that mom that says that phrase? I hope not!

I still use that phrase daily with Emily, so expect at least another 3 years of it :) More, I'm sure. Don't you just hate it?

I am not even a mommy and my students have heard it quite a few times this year alone! Some phrases, even though lacking data driven proof, should be preserved in our society as "timeless"!! What would kids be like if they never heard an adult tell them that! What a bratty little kid that would be! :)
